Oil resources in us

Proven oil reserves in the United States were 43.8 billion barrels of crude oil as of the end of 2018, excluding the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The 2018 reserves represent the largest US proven reserves since 1972. The Energy Information Administration estimates US undiscovered, technically recoverable oil resources to be an additional 198 billion barrels. The mission of the Office of Petroleum Reserves (OPR) is to protect the United States from severe petroleum supply interruptions through the acquisition, storage, distribution, and management of emergency petroleum stocks, and to carry out the U.S. obligations under the International Energy Program. The OPR manages the operational readiness of three emergency stockpiles - the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), the United States’ crude oil stockpile; the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve As of December 31, 2018, the United States had 17.3 billion barrels of crude oil proved reserves and 192.1 Tcf of natural gas proved reserves in nonproducing reservoirs. These volumes are an 8% increase for crude oil and a 15% increase for total natural gas in nonproducing reservoirs from the 2017 levels published in EIA’s previous report.[ 11 ]

About 10 percent of the total oil resource in the conterminous 48 States (approximately 45-46 billion barrels) consists of heavy oil (Nehring and others, 1983). At the end of 1980, California's heavy oil resources were estimated at 32-42 billion barrels (Guerard, 1982). Chevron: America's largest oil producer While ExxonMobil might be the biggest U.S. oil stock, Chevron edges out the global oil giant as the largest oil producer in the country. Overall, Chevron Oil fuels just 1% of our electricity but 95% of our huge transportation needs. Although it fluctuates a bit, the price of crude oil generally constitutes ~70% of the price of gasoline. Fortunately, oil may be a finite resource, but especially as our ever-increasing USGS Energy Resources Program provides periodic assessments of the oil and natural gas endowment of the United States and the World (click here for information about World Oil and Gas Assessments).
